Dating can be a lot of fun provided you know how to handle yourself and every challenging situation. The first date has a different meaning and its impact affects your overall mindset towards future dating.

Here are six ways to overcome the awkwardness of your first date.

1) Choose an activity that will inspire conversation. Tickets to movies, concerts and plays are not always the best choice as most of the time will be spent in silence. Museums, galleries and open air festivals are much more conducive to conversation. If both parties enjoy sports, then sporting events are a good way to spend togetherness and share the excitement of the game. It also allows enough room for conversations and exchange of knowledge about the game and the players. The bonding can take place very well in such situations.

2) It is best to be yourself. If you have a humor streak in you then you can try your hand in impressing her with good and tasteful jokes. Don’t tease, ridicule or make fun of religious beliefs, culture or politics. They could be sensitive topics for your date.

3) Show an interest in your date by asking simple questions. Don’t go to personal on the first meeting. Asking about work, hometowns, pets, movies, books and music are usually safe topics.

4) Have a plan, and fall back on a stock question or two to draw out conversation incase you find yourself sitting quietly and twiddling your thumbs. Questions could be “Who is your all time favorite actor?” or “If you could travel this instant, where would you do?”

5) Avoid cursing, swearing and impolite gestures. Keep conversations flowing in a positive manner.

6) It is always crucial that you listen to what your date says. Being attentive is always appreciated. Find the connections in his/her views and feelings and allow him/her to steer the conversation.
